Bring the Outside In

Fresh air can lead to a totally different perspective. Artists have been using this tried and true method known as "going outside" to get unblocked and inspired. And that is our task for today.

So this is the task - Go outside ( the closest nature - ish place near you)

Use you your phone to take 3 images of people, ultra-close ups or rock/ flowers/ dog on a walk

Write 2 things you hear ( a babbling brook, wind, birds, cars? anything)

Collect one object ( stick, rock, bottle cap)

Once back in the studio use these pieces-to sculpt/ paint or draw a composition that includes all of these somehow of your own interpretation.

Here is how my project went -

So I went to small park just 5 minutes from my home

Such a cute park right in the centre of the bustling Taipei was my inspiration for the task.

I always consider myself an in between when it comes to nature and cities, both offer me an equal dose of inspiration , as much as the green and the water I also love this geometry of the skyscrapers and the pavements by the tar roads, it is just the way I am. So in that way this was the perfect park for my inspiration .

So what caught my attention here were the storm of black fish in the pond, 2 wild goose as they quacked around, The roots of the banyan as it came flowing down and the tiny brook that flowed into the pond, and you know the interesting thing ? In between all this were humans sitting on the nearby deck and working away on their laptops what a symphony of nature and mankind.

So an hour or two later as we returned , inspired by the fish, the toads and all that green and I picked up a fallen root from the banyan as my object of inspiration . And this is what i painted, I felt like i wanted to paint something representational but still abstract. It was very spontaneous I did not plan I just started mixing colours and the painting flowed.

So here goes -

I want to direct your eyes, to the two white blobs of the cute goose on the right extreme corner, the black fish near the pond on the left lower side and and the muddy green/ overlapping whites are all my favourite. Do you see it as I do ? Or do you see something different?

Let me know if you do try the task. I would love to see how different we can be in our inspirations and results.
